The Age Factor

I was so shocked & upset to see second gray hair on my moustache.

Yeah right, aging is a natural phenomenon and there should be no cribbing about it. But to me, aging doesn't seem to be a progressive thing. I feel like I gained 5 years within last one year. I blame it on my work-life imbalance, food habits and very less physical activities.

Recently my friend Balraj celebrated(?!) his 30th birthday. He is the first one to hit 30 among my close circle of friends from my college. I am not sure how he felt about hitting 30, but I felt awful because I am the next one in line to hit 30 in just less than 2 months from now. Honestly, I don't want to be 30. Looks like there is no escaping. :(

In an effort to fix my gray hair problem, I requested my wife for permission to get rid of my moustache. She coolly said to fix the cause instead of the effect. Man, wives are clever.

Seeni, Thinking about getting old is daunting to everyone , you are not alone :). on the other side, i feel happy to get old, grey hair implies that you are experienced , mature. Don't we all want to work with mature people [ may be you start another blog on working with immature people:)].

Stress..Stress..Stress is why we all get old sooner [ i meant grey hair , not energetic etc....].i wonder is only folks working in high tech industry get old sooner. i am seeing lots of my friends that i went school with looking bald and girls with grey hair too [ i am one of them :)]. Is 30 really old?American thinks that they are very young at 30.they start think about life only after 30. Is this because they think that they are young, but on the other side of world [ in india] , folks tend to think that 30 is old. i remember my parents & relatives nagging me to settle before 30.

well, i have lots of thoughts, i think i might bore you all with my thinking. let me stop right here and will provide opportunity for you guys to reflect and contradict my thoughts.

Thirty!?!?!

What to do physically it gives a feel of getting old, but Mentally youth feel is still there.

Naanga Youth-la!

I feel I am old when I see lot of energetic young crowd at office. some times I feel why I am not like them, probably i am experienced or probably i am matured....more stressed..blah blah blah...

Still remembering those days of 20's, where we used to be more energetic. (Kodai Trekking with wounded leg, I dont know how I did that...)

Mmmmm Man I am getting Old too...

Dear Selva,

Yes getting old is not that fun.

Atleast for the grey hair on head we can go for dye. Moustache is a big problem. Luckily you girls dont have that problem. :(

No escaping from aging. :(

Dear Mala...

Your first comment. Thanks. :)

Another problem with the grey hair is, people think that the maturity is high so unfortunately ending up with restricting some of the activities thinking that matured people wont do that.

example: screaming with the crowd in a concert or in theatre. I have stopped doing it whereas I still would love to do it. :(

When you are surrounded with people with ages 22,23 and 24. Of course 30 is very old. I am surrounded with kids with 22 to 26 ages.

I think to get rid of this 'getting old' thinking I should move to US where 30 is not old. :)

Dear Arasa,

I am also wondering about that Kodai trip. I know I am totally unfit physically to make that trip now.

The other day Ramasubbu, my friend, was asking why dont we go for same Kodai trip now. I eagerly said okay immediately. Later when I thought over that...who am I kidding? I can not make that trip.

But this is not about aging though. This is about no physical activities and no physical fitness.

Aging is certainly a daunting factor. But what is the solution...

A Poet like Vaali would say "I am always Young in my mind".

A Successful business Tycoon would say "I will never tell my age to my mind".

A Philosopher would say "Accept the aging factor as a Nature's gift".

But all the responses would merely suggest to escape from the THOUGHT of aging or accept it. None would provide the solution to stop the aging process.

Ideas like Proper Diet taken at proper time & mood, will help in delaying the aging process. It has already been proved that Food taken, when we are in bad mood, is certainly like Poison. But whatz happening in our day-to-day life? Most often, we discuss (shout/argue/scould) only at the time of eating.

Also, the diet we take also plays an important role. We know that the refined sugar(white) is bad for health. But, how many of us avoid it? We know packed foods(including Packed drinking water) are bad for health. (Atleast they do not have anything good in them). Do we stop taking them?

If you want to delay the aging process, then a Proper diet is a must.

Sleep is the one that plays a really important role in aging. People would say 'You need atleast 8 hours of sleep'. But I have a slightly contradicting this view. Actually, the more you sleep, the less number of days you live. Because, it is said that the sleep is the next only to Sex, by which you lose the maximum amount of your 'Prana'.Source: Siddhar Paadalgal (Both the above points are not proved by any universally accepeted research.) So, a proper diet, less sleep, excersise would delay the aging process.

Is there any way to stop the aging process? I read the following article:

"The average number of breath, for a human, per minute is 15. So, it would come to 21600 per day. (If you count the nails in Chidambaram temple's golden roof, the count will be 21,600. This is also said to be a part of Chidambara Rahasiyam). If a person would breath this normal count of 21600 per day, his life time would be around 120 years. The life time increases/decreases (inverse) proportionately. So, if you bring the breath count to zero, then the age will never increase. (But let us ignnore this for the time being)" Source: Kalanginathar Siddhar Paadalgal, Thirumoolar Siddhar Paadalgal.

This kind of regulating the breath is possible through Pranayama and other yoga techniques. A few persons who tried these techniques in recent past are Vallalar and Aravindar-Mother(Known from their writings).

Even though we cannot live forever, we can atleast try to delay the aging process by proper yoga-pranayama-breathing excersise. There is nothing we could lose...

So, Why don't you give a try?.....

Oooops that's a huge comment.

Proper diet I completely agree Sarang.

To comment on the article quote from Kalanginathar Siddhar Paadalgal, Thirumoolar Siddhar Paadalgal:
During work outs a person normally breaths faster and it would on an average be more than 15 per minute. Does that mean that one who works out regularly lives short?

Siva - i think you have not started spotting grey hairs (though you are old enough...). Romba sogamda adhu. :(

Sarangan said...

I do not think Siva will get grey hairs. Because, when people do more research they are more likely to lose them... :-)

Regarding the work outs.. The basic rule of the work out is you should increase the time of the work outs gradually. Initially if you feel like breath increases then it is the time to stop. Gradually, the time of topping will increase. So, that is the proper work out. In these types of work outs, the breath will never increase.

If the breath count increases, then you can very well categorize it as improper work out. So, only in a improper work out your breath count increases. If you breath count increases, the life span ...... :-)

Seenivasan said...

Good knowledge transfer on Work outs.

I think I will go with no work outs...that's better.:)

Siva said...

Strongly object to the old enough part :-)

Don't forget this ..

"neelambari : vayasanlum innum .."

I have heard the breathing and work out part. Yoga makes you breath slowly and correctly.

But given a choice between diet, work outs for 100 years and all you can do for 80 years what will you choose ?

Siva - I would definitely go with living 80 years with all that I can do. Or even 65 years is sufficient.

Siva remember that Neelambari was a almost decade ago. Appamey nee vayasanavan thaan... :))
