Serial Killers

Definition (from Wikipedia):
A serial killer is someone who commits three or more murders over an extended period of time with cooling-off periods in between.

Word of caution (from me):
If you are a weak hearted, don't worry about it and read on. This post is not directly related to the serial killers who take away the lives of innocence. This is about the killers who take away the times of innocence.

Now my story begins...
I have been thinking of writing this since my friend siva posted this. I wouldn't get a better time than this. I am in a celebration mood for some reason. The reason is given at the end of this post.

I feel that the definition of serial killers rightly suits the mega-serials. Read the definition given above again...more murders, extended period, cooling-off period (saturday & sundays) all suit mega-serials perfectly. Right?

Couple of months ago Sun TV made a great decision to move all its non-serial related programmes telecasted during the weekdays to weekends. Now all 5 days of the week most of the time you can see only the serials in Sun TV. Ad-money must be pouring in really huge to make sun tv management to take such a great(!) decision. I believe that Sun TV is loosing its viewrship because of some really good shows in Vijay TV and lack of such good shows in Sun TV.

I think 99.999% of serials would fit in the following template: (please add if you think I have missed something)
  1. A title song by a female singer with all smiling faces of heroine & other castings of the serial. (but the people in the serial never have situations to smile in the serial)
  2. A female who is on the verge of retiring from film industry or who is not getting movie offers or who is retired from the industry is the hero cum heroine
  3. Heroine is either divorced (must be a single mom) or being cheated by husband or fighting for right with her husband
  4. Heroine is born with a lot of siblings (definitely more than 3) & she does the role of head of the family
  5. A female villain and a few more villains to support that female villain
  6. Heroine is a lone warrior; only very few other good people would be there in the serial but even they could not help her when in need
  7. At least one main character is bigamy
  8. When the director dont know how to proceed, there comes a new character and a new side-kick story

A conversation with me & my colleauge just a month ago: (colleague's name is avoided because of confidentiality issues).

Me (reluctantly): By any chance did you watch Selvi, last night?
Colleague (reluctantly): Yeah, why?
Me (with confidence): I missed to watch because of power cut
Colleague (with a great enthusiasm): oh, yesterday GJ went to Selvi's house to get the 'thali'....blah...blah...

I am wasting my precious 1 hr every day watching Kolangal & Selvi. I hate both the serials. You know it's like smoking, most of the smokers don't like to smoke but they can't really quit. These serials are like such addictions.

Can someone please suggest me a best way to quit-watching-serials?

For the best suggestion, I promise to transfer a few shares of Sun TV from my demat a/c to yours. (Worst suggestion gets the entire pack of Chitheeeee DVD, be careful).

Epilogue: Reason for my joy is that Selvi has ended (finally) last week with lots of loose ends. What a relief? 30 mins of productive time is gonna get increased in my life everyday. I am eagerly waiting for Kolangal to get over but there ain’t no trace of ending in a near future.

Things that works

1. As this world is vast but still communication has made it small, u cud try conversating with ur good old buddies in cell using the conference facility. This way u have got three advantages 1) Having fun with friends 2) Preventing ur friends from being addicted to MEGA Serials 3) Envy ur wife so that she might also want to join the fun club with u.

2. Go for a leisure walk with the women u love. This has lots of advantages.

3. Sit in the TV hall and criticise all the scenes . Tease all the ppl who r watching the serial. Day-by-day they might also tease other ppl who watch such serials

4. Read some interesting books

5. Watch Vijay TV programmes

6. Watch some good DVDs

7. Help ur wife in cooking while she watches the MEGA serials :))

Seenivasan said...

Priya - that's an exhaustive list. thanks for the huge list of suggestions.

Lets see if anyone has a very funny & creative way of getting rid of the mega serials.

Anonymous said...

1) Better sell off the TV.
2) Stick to news channels - north indian specific like NDTV, CNN or DMK specific SUN News.
3) Switch to Sun music. u will not be tied up to soap. Rather u will get to see a "variety".
4) U can view SUN music in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam.

Seenivasan said...

Radha, thanks for your suggestions.

Seriously TV has become an inherent part of our lives. Selling the TV? I dont know if it is even possible.
I just imagined my home with no TV. It's really good to even imagine that. Time that I save out of that is really huge.

NDTV & CNN - unfortunately my monopoly-cable-provider is not providing me with such good channels.

I am seriously contemplating to get rid of my monopoly cable provider and go for Tata SKY - DTH option. Has anyone tried this?

Creative ??
Then go and make money in producing a MEGA serial in that MEGA SERIAL watching time.
;)

Seenivasan said...

oooh...when I am looking for ideas to get rid of mega serials, you are asking me to produce mega serials...
I certainly wont.

Baranidharan said...

1. Make your wife to hate serials, once she develops the disliking she will not allow you to watch the serial.

2. It happened to me. From NUMTV archive I watched "Sithi" in the weekend (about 14 hours), after that I never wanted to see any serial. It is the same formula Rajini said in Arunachalam.

Happy quitting.

Seenivasan said...

Barani,

1. My wife also sails in the same boat as me. She also hates mega serials.

2. Arunachalam style...sounds interesting but after 14 hrs of watching a mega serial would I be alive?! isnt it a suicide attempt?

seenivasan,

Don't be happy that Selvi serial is over...

R u asking info to quit watching Mega serial or planning to use these info to create a story for a mega serial like kadhiyin kadhai, Balumahendra Neram.
Practise drinking as u will not only forget mega serial but the entire world!

An alternative would be to switch to FM radio for sometime and u get used to it. U would not only get good information but also good Pure tamizh language ( Suriyan - Yaazh kannan, one lady - time 930pm-11pm). nowadays Hello chennai and Rainbow are good. Mirchi is good in day time but kill u with boring old songs at nite.

Kitta thatta Mega serial paakkarathum dum adikkira maadhirithaan macchi.

Dear Anonymous (who is this?),

Unfortunately I happened to see the first episode of Arasi. I have not seen the other episodes and I wont see them.

If I start watching Arasi too, even God can not save me...

Seenivasan said...

Dear Anonymous,

welcome to my blog and thanks for your suggestions.

Many people are suggesting FM. I think I must try that for sometime.

Drinking? my wife would kill me. :(

Correct, mega serial is like smoking. Very difficult to quit.

I certainly don't have any plans to create story for mega serials using these info. :)

Your point is really valuable one. But for your information, there are lot of new serials are coming up -

If we have some goal (fire) in our mind, I am sure we don’t concentrate on these local things. I believe most of the Indians (Including me) don’t have any ambition. For example, as you all know we have lot of things which can be done in the IT field, but we are happy with what we are currently getting. I believe
We are thinking in a small circle. Even I thought many times about my future objectives. Most of the time it ended with money. We are not trying to achieve something but we are trying to earn more money.

I believe money is the big constraint in our life. If we think that money is not a constraint. I am sure, even I am able to do something in my field i.e. software field.

Everyone should think that what they are trying to achieve in next 10 years, then they need to work towards that way with full of fun.

Nan roomba peseren nangran. But I am sure if you want to become like Narayana Murthy, Think Global - . If you want to think globally, Don’t think about money.

I am sure; I can achieve something in my field before I die.

So evaluate yourself and make your life fun and more meaningful.

I have many more comments. Wait and watch.

Seenivasan said...

Dear Babu, thanks for sharing your wisdom.

Just I am paraphrasing your statements:
"Have a goal for your life, do only the things that are required to meet the goal. Then you wont waste your time on such serial things."

Nicely said babu...thanks. I am waiting for more comments from you.

Baranidharan said...

Gotcha, I read it in the wrong way, I thought you were interested but wanted to quit. You & your wife both hate serial and but could not avoid seeing it and wanted to quit. Mmmm pretty complicated.

Solution I could see is, make note of the time you watch the serial mostly. After that plan something else during that time like a walk, reading books or call up a friend & say how you hate serials. This basic diversion should help you

barani..u r the same confused barani as i saw you in college days.

keep it up

Baranidharan said...

With all due respect who is this anonymous

Seenivasan said...

Barani...if my post wasn't clear enough first time...sorry.

Yes...I must figure out something to stop this watching-serial-nonsense thing. :)

Even I am also curious to know who is that anonymous....with all due respect who is this anony?! (at least pls mail me)

Seeni,

Atlast I am back to my normal health.

I am not good at sitting in front of TV's on regular basis. Also Its not easy for me to sit and watch a 3 hr movie.

Anyway, My Suggestion would be try these 2 extremes.

1. On Trial basis, Get rid of cable for a month.
2. Or Try watching TV to the extreme (probably more than 8 hours) on a week end, definitely you will get bored.

Worth Suggestion, I would go with what siva said.

Seenivasan said...

Arasa, welcome back. Good to see you in normal health.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I envy your habit of not sitting in front of TV on a regular basis.

1. Getting rid of the cable for a month is a good option. I had a few altercations with my monopoly cable-wala and not paying the cable bill for the past 3 months. I am eagerly waiting for the day he cuts my connection himself. :)

2. Watching it to the extreme - that's what I am doing boss.

Anonymous said...

Seeni

Skip watching the serial for a week or so then u won't feel like watching it.. it worked for me.. may be will work for u..

:)
Selva

Anonymous said...

Dear Seeni, My suggestion is not to stop watching Mega serial.DO like this. Switch on the TV and continue ur work like cooking,cleaning..Don't concentrate much on dialogues..Do as you listen radio..hope none of us will sit and listen to radio..Try this out..then you wont feel like waste of time.

Seenivasan said...

Selva,

Thanks fo the suggestion.

These serials are made such an intelligent(!) way that even if you skip for a few months you wont miss the story line. So, skipping for a week wouldn't really help it.

Seenivasan said...

Nithya,

Well your point is good. I will try that out. Thanks.

Sarangan said...

just one more idea to that list...

no books.. no music... no excersise.. no chatting... no money-making....

Go to the top floor of your apartments... sit alone...look at the sky... see the moon & stars... immerse yourself in the light of the moon..enjoy the beauty of the sky....never pay attention to any thoughts....

1/2 hour a day....If you would do it for a week.... then the chances of watching a Serial is less.....

P.S: This suggestion will work for Gents. I do not know whether this will work for ladies...

Seenivasan said...

thanks for the suggestion Sarang. Let me try this for a day. :)

Seenivasan said...

Well, I think it's time to announce the results:

Finalists who compete for the Sun TV shares with best suggestions are:
1. Go to Gym (Ramesh - over-the-top)
2. Go for walk (Priya and Barani)
3. Have goal & do things that are relevant to the goals ( Babu)
4. Moon watching (Sarang)

Finalists who compete for the Chithee DVD with worst suggestions:
1. Arunachalam formula of watching serials/TV to the extreme (Barani & Arasan)
(are you guys trying to get me killed?)

Any disputes?!?!

Arasan said...

Nattamai...theerpai maathu :)-

Seeni,

BTW, Did you finalize to whom you are going to transfer the SUN TV shares.

Seenivasan said...

Thanks Seeni.
Pleaes transfer your SUN TV Shares to my DMAT account.

I believe it is too late to comment something on this topic. The thing is that when this topic started, i was in India and now i am in London. okay . No probs.

My point is that make yourself always busy by doing things to achieve your goals. Make it as a habit and I am sure, nobody in this world born as a talented person. It is about how you mange your life style.

All the best to everyone.

Thanks for the insight babu.
