Pottermania

I visited Odyssey last weekend just to check on the Pottermaniacs. By calling maniacs I don't mean any disgrace. Just that it sounds good. All pottermaniacs please take this as a compliment. We owe a lot to J.K.Rowling for making many of the kids these days to get the habit of reading. I could see lot of teen-agers and even smaller ones in the book shop buying the book or turning the pages curiously at the bookstore itself.

I have not read any of the Harry Potter books. I am planning to read along with my kid when he is ready to read that series. I read in some articles that there are people who locked themselves in a room with no water and food (of course strictly no cell phone) to complete reading the last version at a stretch. There was a huge hype around this release as it was the final one and Rowling had announced that an important character is murdered at the end. By the way who is that one?

Somehow the Potter movies did not interest me.

Well, I am one of those people :-). If you haven't then read any of the books then now is the best time as all 7 books are there.

I agree with you seeni except the sorcerer stone.. other movie did not facinate me.

I heard that reading novel was good than movie. Since I saw five parts I am not planning to read it. There is no fun in reading when you know the story line. So I have started with Half blood prince, let me tell you how it goes after completing...

As I had written a long back it's always reading a novel is better than its movie version. Reader would have his own imagination while reading. Director's imagination comes as the movie. Both most of the times wont match. That's the problem. Imagination also varies based on the person, culture, age, experience and a lot of other things too. It's very tough to meet the imagination.

Seeni,
not just kids; in a shop at adyar the queue was so big such that people were standing on the road- and believe me men and women of all ages were there standing from morning to buy a copy....including senior citizens!

That's cool...Anu.

By the way did you buy one?

No Seeni,

I am not a novel reader :-( I would love to, but I am lazy to complete a book.
Maybe thats why I like 'thirkural' (2 lines-simple and short)kind of write-ups than novels.
I am still reading 'One night at a Call Center' which i started one year back :-)

Maybe thats the reason they make movies from novels for the benefit of people like me.

one year to complete 'one night at a call center' is a little too much. :)

I was also like you. If you complete one or two good novels you would automatically get the interest to go in search of good novels.

Between books and movies - movies would be my first choice because of the same laziness..!!!

:-)I know, one year is a little too much. First few days(maybe 2-3 days) I carried the book with me as if i were a professional novel reader- used to read it when in office bus, after dinner....(just like the kid in the 'Bank of India' ad who carries his piggy bank everywhere he goes).....

Later on was waiting for the chapters to end soon....

And after that kept the book open, with the lights on slept off...(got scoldings from mom too for that) :-) Then on that purple book is kept untouched...

Wish I cultivate the habit soon (which I should have done during high school :-( )

Cultivating the reading habit is so easy.

It is like being around the people who discuss cricket a lot. if you are always with them you will have no choice but start watching the cricket and start participating in the conversation...apply same logic.

Just get along with people who are voracious readers. Make sure you are present with them while they are discussing (rather flaunting) about their recent read. You will get a bit annoyed. That's the key. use that 'annoy' as the motivating factor. pick the books - read it.

Seeni,
I'll take that as a tip. Will definitely let you know once I become a professional 'novel' reader... :-)

Coming back to Harry Potter, have you watched the movie? I liked the previous parts better actually...

Harry Potter? I have no plans to watch that movie at all.

"professional novel reader"???? hmmm...all the best.
